Awardees Profiles- N.K Kanga Awards- Ms. Sushmeetha Bubna- Blind Welfare
Born with congenital cataracts, Ms. Sushmeetha Bubna (41) subsequently suffered from multiple eye disorders, leading to vision loss in one eye at age ten and total loss of sight at the age of twenty four. Unfazed, she completed her graduation in the commerce stream and diploma in business management from the university of Mumbai, besides courses in computer hardware; Train the trainer course from Enable India – a voluntary organisation empowering persons with disabilities to join mainstream workforce; and a number of other courses from the Hadley School for the Blind, USA.
Ms. Bubna joined her family business in 1995 and is presently the director of the firm, handling a plethora of responsibilities including purchase & sales, Human Resource, Customer Relationship Management, Administration and much more.
Ms. Bubna is also the Founder Director of Voice Vision, an institution she established in 2000, to enable the visually challenged through technology, and facilitate social inclusion of persons with disabilities(PwDs).Voice Vision, apart from computer training conducts knowledge Sessions for PwDs, which has benefited over 1,500 individuals. The website of Voice Vision which Ms. Bubna conceptualised, designed and built with the help of students of Voice Vision, won the National Award for the Best Accessible Website in 2011, given by the ministry of social justice and empowerment (Disability Division), Government of India.
The success Ms. Bubna achieved with her sheer grit and determined courage in the face of adversity, brought her some coveted honors like the “10th Mrs. Piloo Dorab Khambatta Memorial Award”- for being and outstanding Self-Employed Blind Entrepreneur- given by the National Association for the Blind(India)in 2004 and the “Dr. Batra’s Positive Health Award 2010”- recognising heroism of people who display outstanding courage in their fight against disease and disability- presented by Bajaj Discover. Ms. Bubna success story has received the much deserved appreciation and coverage, both in the print and electronic media.
